What I love about music is its pursuit of the pure flow state. It is the tool we use to express what can be said no other way. It is focusing the mind on patterns and sequences to liberate the heart’s experience. And this experience is inherently multiplicative. One musician weaving their contribution with another’s yields a product greater than the sum of its parts, each line reinforcing, contrasting, resonating with its counterparts. It is a distinct act of communication and solidarity. Paean, a classical Greek term for a song of enthusiastic triumph and thanksgiving, seeks to capture this sentiment using minimalist structures of interlocking motivic figures in strict tempo. The pulse reigns—insistent and unifying—and within our entrainment we weave our parts.
