la fille aux cheveux de corbeau was composed during Fall 2019 as a project for my Analysis Through Composition class. The work was conceived as a both a figurative and literal reflection of Debussy’s timelessly beautiful piano prelude la fille aux cheveux de lin (The Girl with the Flaxen Hair). Debussy’s major modes and keys are exchanged for minor equivalents - his simple triple meter is exchanged for a compound duple. As such, I chose to title the work in a similar fashion, and Debussy’s girl with flaxen hair is exchanged for The Girl with the Raven Hair. Otherwise, the piece remains quite similar in mood and style to Debussy’s original piece, and serves as a humble pastiche of one of my favorite works of music.
