Recording: Benjamin Wyland, Flute | Brian J. Hinkley, Piano
Inspired by Maya Angelou’s famous poem “Caged Bird”, his shadow shouts is a meditation on the feeling of being trapped physically and/or metaphorically, and the emotions that may come from this feeling. The work begins with a livid shout from the flute, banging against its walls and proclaiming its anger, reaching up repeatedly to a high note but unable to quite make it past that note. The piano interrupts and jeers, eventually bringing the flute to submission. The flute takes a different approach, whispering and simmering, eventually finding itself in a lonesome cadenza and hearing its voice echo through its empty chamber. With new resolution, the flute begins to shout again - this time, more deliberately. As the flute rises in emotion, the piano matches it, spinning out of control. The flute’s rage turns to sorrow, and as it cries out, reaching higher and higher, it steps just one note above the note it previously could not pass. Sorrow subsides, and the piece ends as it began - but now, with just a glimpse of hope in the distance.
his shadow shouts is dedicated to Ben Wyland and Brian Hinkley for premiering the work. They are both astoundingly skilled musicians and excellent human beings, and it is a privilege to share music with them.
